I have the privilege of sharing actual photos; everything with the new house has been consuming so much of our time the past 3 weeks, but I was able to shoot Jodi and Karl’s engagement session yesterday at Fort Pulaski, near Tybee Island. It was such a joy (both to be with this fun couple, and to get out from construction mode!). I haven’t shot here before, so it was an adventure in new things for me. Also, I broke out the Holga for a little bit, so I’ll share those once I get them back from the lab. The air was brisk and 30+ mph wind kept us chilly, but we survived alright! On with the show:

I love the blowout backlighting along with the joy and love expressed.

Yes, we took a few shots in the tunnels; these were the cleanest, most well kept tunnels I’ve ever been in. The lighting was interesting with how it played off those archways.

I’m looking forward to the wedding in a month and a half. It’s gonna be awesome out there at Bona Bella!

Hello everyone; today we feature a short little video that is the “extended director’s cut” version of what I submitted to win a scholarship to Jose Villa’s Photo Workshop. Unfortunately, the 12-second original version didn’t win. I still had an amazing time shooting the little project with my family, editing it, and presenting it here. I hope you enjoy.

We are featured in today’s Savannah Morning News! The whole family!

I am so glad Boaz could be a part of the shoot too. =) He was so cute! And he did a great job, the perfect little star! =) Happy, excited, all smiles. We’ll have some photos up from the shoot sometime soon – though it was a bit odd being photographed while photographing. Nate even jumped in at times to photograph us, so we had 3 cameras going at once. And as far as being interviewed – I couldn’t help but feel like a newscaster. Thank you Savannah Morning News for this special gift, we had a blast.

Well everybody, I know we’ve been slacking on the photo blogging for a little while, but we’ve got some cool news coming your way: Open Light Studio has been blessed to be published four times recently! Our Wedding Photography has just recently graced the pages of Hilton Head Monthly; they chose 3 images from a recent wedding to use in their editorial/bridal section in their February issue.

Also, we found out that The Knot: Georgia is publishing Jennifer and Scott’s Savannah Wedding Photography as a feature in their Fall/Winter 2010 issue; in addition to that, they are grabbing a bouquet shot from Melissa and Jeff’s downtown Savannah Wedding for a color story. We will make sure to share those magazine spreads when we get them (should be sometime this July).

Our most recent ad in Savannah Weddings Magazine came out, and it’s pretty awesome (due to our amazing designer). See below:

Lastly, but surely not least, is a profile the Savannah Morning News is publishing in print and online of Laura and Open Light Studio. When it rains, it pours. We’ll hopefully have a scan of that up on this coming Monday. What’s amazing is that all of these publishings (besides the ad, of course) came from these magazines approaching us; we didn’t even have to submit anything! We’re thankful for these great opportunities and hope to get some more Savannah weddings up on amazing blogs like Snippet and Ink, Wedding Chicks, Once Wed, and Southern Weddings.

Today we share an announcement for Tour D’Epicure, a local fundraiser for America’s Second Harvest of Coastal Georgia. Guests will board trolleys at 4:00 pm (on February 28, 2010) and stop at five fantastic restaurants including Cha Bella, Eos, Leoci’s, Local 11ten, and Sol. Each restaurant will offer a plate paired with two wines and feature an original piece by a local artist that may be acquired through silent auction. Each tour will also visit the Iocovozzi Gallery where guests will be privileged to an exclusive photography exhibit featuring the food bank’s Kids Cafe program. Laura was honored to do the photography for this exhibit, so we feature a few of them here. But you will have to join the Tour D’Epicure for the entire exhibition of photographs!

Space is limited, so make your reservations now; you will enjoy the amazing food by some of Savannah’s best chefs! Tickets are $75/person. Reservations may be made at helpendhunger.org. For more information call 912.721.1796. Proceeds benefit America’s Second Harvest Kids Cafe Program, a leading initiative in reducing childhood hunger.

And in case you are wondering, “what in the world is Kid’s Cafe about?”, well, here you go:
America’s Second Harvest of Coastal Georgia sponsors thirty-four Kids Café sites in the inner city of Savannah, Chatham County, Toombs County, Bulloch County and Glynn County. The program provides an evening meal to over 2,500 at-risk children who need a nutritious meal in a safe environment while waiting for their parents to return home from work each day. Each afternoon volunteers at Kids Café sites serve the children a hot meal and provide mentoring and tutorial assistance.

In Chatham County, there are 33,994 children enrolled in schools. Of those children, 21,024 are eligible for free or reduced-priced lunches due to low household income. For many of these children, the meal we provide is the only evening meal they will receive.

America’s Second Harvest receives minimum reimbursement from the Georgia Office of School Readiness/USDA for meals served to children ages 5 through 12. The reimbursement rates are not adequate to fully sustain the program. Moreover, there is no reimbursement for children 13 through 17 who frequently attend after school programming at each site and are hungry. At our current level of programming, the average loss per site will be approximately $9,000. To resolve the loss, America’s Second Harvest is seeking out civic organizations, corporations, and faith-based organizations that are willing to adopt a Kids Café site for sponsorship or to assist with other fund-raising efforts.

Today we share an engagement photography session that I shot down on River Street. Lindsey, Brad, and I traveled the Peacemaker ship, cobblestone streets, and the wonderful Emmet park (on the far east side of Bay Street). We had a pretty fun time, even though the rain threatened us the whole time, and the temperature seemed to be dropping. So I share with you this fantastic couple:

The handmade flower makers were out; at least they don’t make you pay, right?

This photograph below right is so captivating to Laura and I. Are we weird, or do you agree?

In case none of you are aware of Emmet Park, you should be. It’s a wonderful spot for photographs and relaxing. Benches are there, and you are shielded pretty well from the traffic on Bay Street. I recommend it. Thanks you two; I’m looking forward to the wedding this summer!

Last Saturday afternoon, I put away photo editing in Lightroom to go on a little trip to the wildlife center on Oatland Island (Savannah’s attempt at a zoo). We didn’t really get far into it all because we got distracted with having fun and relaxing. We mostly hung around the farm animal section instead of venturing to the wolves and cougars. So we share a few of our favorite images from the two hour respite from work: the first one my (semi-formal) portrait of lovely Laura and Boaz, then on the right Laura’s (slightly more formal) portrait of father & son.

You don’t have to worry, Boaz has hidden wires holding him up in case he falls off the hand rail.

I love the light and greens in the greenhouse; it seems so invitingly soft and ethereal.

Again, my portrait of Laura and hers of me.

We have this amazingly fun engagement photogaphy session to share. Sarah and Ryan are from Ohio, but they’re getting married down in Hilton Head Island, and we are priveleged enough to be their wedding photographers! They made a visit down to Tybee beach around Christmas time, when it was 50 degrees on the beach (which is cold for us, but a warm streak for them). We had a great time, especially with the birds, as you will see below. And now we present the couple:

I love this shot of the birds flying around the couple; thank you birds.

And then, once the bread was brought out, it started getting INSANE! (I think Sarah & Ryan were scared for their life) We were able to get some of THE BEST SHOTS EVER.

So after the reenactment from Alfred Hitchcock’s “The Birds”, we calmed things down again.

So keep it real you two, and we look forward to the wedding this summer!

So we take a rest today from our overwhelming work of finishing the photos for clients, to post a little personal taste into our week. We traveled to Nashville, TN for PPA’s annual conference, Imaging USA. It was fantastic, and I would recommend it. Very enlightening for us to learn from amazing photographers, and to have a vision of where to head Open Light Studio as a business. We drove along with our friend, Nicole Rule, and we stopped (in the midst of the driving abyss that is I-16) in this field of cotton for a few snaps. Obviously, the images with Laura and I both are courtesy of Nicole.

This is our action shot.

Nicole and Laura model for the next Anthropologie catalogue.

Then we stopped for a late dinner in Chattanooga to see our friend Marcie and meet her fiance, Aaron. (We didn’t mean to form a diagonal line with our setup) By the time we got back on the road, it started to snow (which I think was the first snow I’ve encountered in more than a few years).

And we finally arrived at our home for the few days we would be in Nashville at 11:30pm. We quickly went to sleep, only to wake up 5 hours later for the 7am session at the Gaylord Opryland Convention Center/hotel. I took this photo shortly before we left the house; I enjoyed the moon in the far right corner with that burst of orange coming behind the trees. Maybe you all will enjoy it as much as I.

And we end with a shot of the motley crew waiting before we hear Jim Garner on the last day. I didn’t realize it at the time, but I actually was happy, just not really smiling.

Let me end with a word of advice to any photographer searching for inspiration and beauty with their art and imaging: Jose Villa. I was looking forward to hearing him for weeks before we actually left, and he inspired me to make wonderful images that are timeless and full of beauty. So thank you Jose.

Wedding Design and Coordination by the amazing Amanda Spencer; catering by the Westin (you’re awesome Malely!); flowers by Jackie Lacey; wedding cake by Savannah Custom Cakes; videography by Coastal Wedding Films.

This superb wedding was a complete joy to photograph for Laura and I. Both of the families and all of the friends were so wonderful, and the day was perfectly set up and directed by Amanda Spencer. Thank you all! We’ve put a few pictures up here, but the slideshow underneath is where the real treat is contained. So make sure to check it out in all of it’s 130+ image glory. Thank you Maggie and Gibbo, and wonderful wishes to you as husband and wife!

I love this shot between the couple with that stained glass glowing in the back; and now the newly formed couple.

I quick jaunt to the sea…it was actually about 40 degrees out (though sunny and gorgeous, thank you Lord!). They were both troopers about the cold and I think we captured some beautiful moments between them at Hilton Head Beach.
